- An ECLB is one kind of safety device that is used for protection against leakage current. it breaks the circuit & disconnects the power supply to the load when it senses the leakage current.
- ELCB is mainly used for protection against electrical shock. They do not offer protection against overloading or short circuit. Therefore, it must be used in series with MCB.
- The phase and neutral wire of the power supply are connected to separate windings of a small transformer in ELCB.
In the given figure, the phase and neutral of the power supply are connected to separate winding 'A' and 'B' of a small transformer in ELCB.
Working of ELCB:

- One terminal of the relay coil is connected to the metal body of the equipment to be protected against earth leakage and another terminal is connected to the earth directly.
- If any insulation failure occurs or live phase wire touches the metal body, of the equipment, there must be a voltage difference that appears across the terminal of the coil connected to the equipment body and earth.
- This voltage difference produces a current to flow through the relay coil.
- If the voltage difference crosses the predetermined limit, the current through the relay becomes sufficient to actuate the relay for tripping the associated circuit breaker to disconnect the power supply to the equipment.
