Testing of transformer:

There are two types of tests performed on the transformer.

1.) Open circuit test:

  • This test is performed on the LV side keeping the HV side open-circuited.
  • Ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter is connected on LV side.
  • It is performed on rated voltage and rated frequency.
  • It gives magnetizing current and core loss.
  • It gives the turn ratio.

2.) Short circuit test:

  • This test is performed on the HV side keeping the LV side short-circuited.
  • Ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter is connected on HV side.
  • It is performed on rated current
  • It gives copper loss.
  • It helps in the calculation of equivalent leakage impedance.
  • It helps in the determination of voltage regulation.
