Option 1 : Authentic materials and texts

Reading becomes an extremely engaging and fruitful activity when we are in a position to connect our readings to our daily life experiences or feelings or thought processes or the problems we face in our daily life situations.

  • We realize the need to be well-read and informed when we experience firsthand the benefits of how our reading knowledge helps us solve our day-to-day problems, helps us understand the world around us, and help us connect what happens in the present to the various other events of the world.
  • This experience does not happen if we have just read the words – but happens only when we make connections with what we have read. There are three types of connections that we often make when we read a text – text to self, text to text and text to world.

  • The easiest connection that a student is able to make while reading any text is the text-to-world connection. The student is able to relate all that is being taught in language lessons to the day to day life.
  • Like for example, in social science classes, students read about the formation of the government, and they are able to relate to the National Election of India that happened in 2014.
  • Authentic materials and texts are a good resource to build the skill of 'making text-to-world connections' as authentic materials refer to any text, audio, video, or object developed or written in natural language and contexts.
  • Authenticity means that nothing of the original text or material is changed and also its presentation and layout are retained. Authentic Material gives authentic and cultural information.
  • Authentic materials are mostly drawn from periodicals that are constantly being updated. These materials relate more closely to learners' needs and provide them with a source of relevant materials for learning.

Hence, it is clear that authentic materials and texts are a good resource to build the skill of 'making text-to-world connections'.

  • Word Wall refers to a teaching tool where alphabets or words are displayed on the wall to make it easy for the student to learn the vocabulary and spelling patterns.
  • It provides children an opportunity where the >words are seen, noticed, and used by them.  It nurtures the expressiveness, creativity, and imagination skill of the children.
