Concept:-

Nasal bleeding (epistaxis):

  • Bleeding from inside the nose is called epistaxis.
  • Fairly common and is seen in all age groups.
  • Epistaxis refers to nose bleed or hemorrhage from the nose.
  • It mostly commonly originates in the anterior portion of the nasal cavity.

Causes:

  • External trauma
  • Foreign bodies in nasal cavities.
  • Neoplasms.
  • Mycotic ulceration of B.V. in the wall of the guttural pouch around the guttural pouch.
  • Encapsulated hematoma in the nasal cavity.
  • Erosion of the nasal mucosa in glanders.
  • Internal trauma due to passage of nasal tube or endoscope.

Management in epistaxis:

  • Keep the patient quiet
  • Place the patient in a sitting position leaning forward, semi-fowler position.
  • Apply direct pressure by pinching the entire soft lower portion of the nose for 10 – 15 min.
  • Apply an icepack to the nose and cheek area.
  • Losing clothes and giving reassurance.
  • Partially insert a small gauze pad into the nose.
