Let his speed in still water be v kmph and the speed of the flow be u kmph
⇒ His speed while rowing upstream = v - u = 144/4 = 36 kmph
⇒ Time taken by him to row downstream = 4/(1 + 1/3) = 3 hours
⇒ His speed while rowing downstream = v + u = 144/3 = 48 kmph
⇒ v - u = 36 and v + u = 48
Adding both the equations
⇒ 2v = 84
⇒ v = 42 kmph
