1. Word Painting - listen to the music and identify if any of the words or ideas conveyed in the text are 'mirrored' by the music. For example, the word 'fall' or 'low' may be sung over a descending scale. As it's musical theater that you're critiquing you can get quite creative with these ideas. 2. Repetition of motifs - you often find that certain ideas or elements of the story have their own distinct musical phrases which appear throughout the musical. Also known as 'leitmotif', these phrases help the audience to identify different characters, emotions and ideas.
