If your story is set in a realistic setting, try spending time in that place and taking notes. It's amazing what just sitting down there, observing the setting, and writing down a lot of precise details can do.
You can experiment with different shades of the colors you would like to use on a separate scrap of paper. Try sketching out a single peak/curve and just shading that....
