People often feel paralyzed when they enter REM sleep. If you're waking up during the REM cycle, it may be because you aren't comfortable in bed. Try turning the temperature down and blocking out the light from your windows with blackout curtains. You may not be getting enough sleep as well. Shoot for 7-9 hours a night to avoid waking up suddenly during REM sleep on a regular basis.
