আমাদের শরীরের উত্তাপ যখন থার্মোমিটার দিয়ে মাপা হয়। তখন সেই তাপ থার্মোমিটারে চলে যায় । সেই তাপের কারণে থার্মোমিটারে থাকা পারদ প্রসারি হয়। এভাবে আমরা বুঝতে আমাদের শরীরে থাকা তাপ মাত্রা । তারপর পারদ আগের স্থানে নিতে ঝাকানো হয়।
