Formula used

Area of rectangle = length × breadth

Calculation

Length of carpet without border = 12 - (0.5 × 2) = 11 m

Breadth of carpet without border = 6 - (0.5 × 2) = 5 m

Area of outer boundary with border = 12 × 6 = 72 m2

Area of inner boundary without border = 11 × 5 = 55 m2

Hence, area of designed border = 72 - 55 = 17 m2
