Total number of students in the hostel were = 35

Formula:

Average = Sum of all observations/Total number of all observation

Calculation:

Let the average expenditure be Rs. x

According to the question

35x + 42 = 42 (x – 1)

⇒ 35x + 42 = 42x – 42

⇒ 42x – 35x = 42 + 42

⇒ 7x = 84

⇒ x = 84/7

⇒ x = 12

∴ Initial expenditure was = 12 × 35 = Rs. 420
