Let per day per person expenditure initially = x

Now, per day per person expenditure is reduced by Rs. 2 = x -2

∴ Initial expenditure + Additional expenditure = New expenditure

Where, initial expenditure = no. of persons initially × per day expenditure initially

New expenditure = no. of persons now × per day expenditure now

⇒ 40 x + 40 = 52(x – 2)

⇒ 40 x + 40 = 52 x – 104

⇒ 12 x = 144

∴ x = 12

Initial expenditure = 40x = 40 × 12 = Rs. 480
