There are 40 students in a hostel. Due to the admission of 32 new students, expenses of mess increased by Rupee 48 per day. However, per day per person expenditure is reduced by Rupee 2. What was the original expenditure of the mess per day? Correct Answer Rupee 240
Given:
There are 40 students in a hostel. Due to the admission of 32 new students, expenses of mess increased by Rupee 48 per day. However, per day per person expenditure is reduced by Rupee 2.
Concept Used:
Sum = Average × Number of observation
Calculation:
Let per day per person expenditure initially = x
Now, per day per person expenditure is reduced by Rupee 2 = x -2
Initial expenditure + something = New expenditure
Where, initial expenditure = no. of persons initially × per day expenditure initially
New expenditure = no. of persons now × per day expenditure now
⇒ 40x + 48 = (40 + 32) × (x – 2)
⇒ 40x + 48 = 72 × (x - 2)
⇒ 10x + 12 = 18x – 36
⇒ 8 x = 48
⇒ x = 6
Initial expenditure was 40x = 40 × 6 = Rupee 240
∴ The original expenditure of the mess per day was Rs. 240.
