Ankit and Varun divided a bag full of apples between them, such that Ankit received 88.89% of the apples. But, Ankit gave 37.5% of his apples to Varun. If Ankit still had 5 more apples than Varun, how many apples were there in the bag?

Ankit and Varun divided a bag full of apples between them, such that Ankit received 88.89% of the apples. But, Ankit gave 37.5% of his apples to Varun. If Ankit still had 5 more apples than Varun, how many apples were there in the bag? Correct Answer 45

Let there are ‘x’ apples in the bag

No. of apples Ankit received = 88.89% of x = (8/9)x

No. of apples Varun received = x - (8/9)x = (1/9)x

But, Ankit gave 37.5% of apples to Varun,

No. of apples Ankit gave to Varun = 37.5% of (8/9)x = 3/8 × (8/9)x = (1/3)x

Hence,

No. of apples Ankit finally had = (8/9)x - (1/3)x = (5/9)x

No. of apples Varun finally had = (1/9)x + (1/3)x = (4/9)x

Now, Ankit still had 5 more apples than Varun,

⇒ (5/9)x - (4/9)x = 5

⇒ (1/9)x = 5

⇒ x = 9 × 5 = 45

∴ There were 45 apples in the bag
