A mixture of 200 liters of spirit and alcohol contains 40% alcohol. How much more alcohol should be added to the mixture to increase the percentage of alcohol to 50% in the new mixture? Correct Answer 40 liters
Given:
A mixture of 200 liters of spirit and alcohol contains 40% alcohol.
To increase the percentage of alcohol to 50%
Concept used:
Using allegation method
Calculation:
In 200 liters 40% alcohol
⇒ (40/100) × 200
⇒ 80 liters
And spirit
⇒ 200 – 80
⇒ 120
Using mixture and allegation
Ratio is 1 : 1
Let X liter of alcohol
Spirit is remain same so
⇒ (X/120) = 1
⇒ X = 120
Alcohol added
⇒ 240 – 200
⇒ 40 liters
∴ Alcohol should be added is 40 liters.
Alternate method:
In 200 liters 40% alcohol
So, alcohol is 80 liters and spirit is 120 liters
In new mixture spirit is not change
So 50% of spirit = 120
And 50% of alcohol = 120
Total mixture is
⇒ 120 + 120
⇒ 240 liters
Alcohol added
⇒ 240 – 200
⇒ 40 liters
∴ Alcohol should be added is 40 liters.
