P, Q and R can complete a piece of work together in 4 days. P alone can complete it in 8 days while R alone can complete it in 10 days. If the total wages to be paid to complete the work is Rs.2,000, how much wages are paid to Q to complete the work ? Correct Answer Rs. 200

Given:

P, Q and R can complete a piece of work together in 4 days.

P alone can complete the work in 8 days.

R alone can complete the work in 10 days.

Total wages to be paid to complete the work is Rs.2,000.

Concepts used:

1 day work done by individual = Work/time

Time = Work/Efficiency

Calculation:

1 day work of P = 1/8

1 day work of R = 1/10

Let Q alone complete a piece of work in x days.

P, Q and R can complete a piece of work together in 4 days.

⇒ (1/8) + (1/10) + (1/x) = 1/4

⇒ 9/40 + (1/x) = 1/4

⇒ 1/x = (1/4) – (9/40)

⇒ x = 40 days

Ratio of efficiency of P, Q and R = 1/8 ∶ 1/40 ∶ 1/10 = 5 ∶ 1 ∶ 4

Total wages to be paid to complete the work is Rs.2,000.

Wages paid to Q if he alones complete the work = 1/(5 + 4 + 1) × Rs. 2,000 = Rs. 200

∴ Q will earn Rs. 200 if he alone would complete the work.
