A leak in the bottom of a tank can empty the full tank in 8 hours. An inlet pipe fills water at the rate of 3 litres per minute. When the tank is full, the inlet is opened and due to the leak the tank is empty in 10 hours. Find the capacity of the tank.

Given:

A leak in the bottom of a tank can empty the full tank in 8 hours.

An inlet pipe fills water at the rate of 3 liters per minute.

Calculation:

Let inlet pipe take x hrs to fill the tank

⇒ 1/x - 1/8 = - 1/10(empty the tank)

⇒ 1/x = 1/8 - 1/10

⇒ 1/x = (5 - 4)/40 = 1/ 40

⇒ 3 liters per min

⇒ x = 40 hr  = 40 × 60 min = 240min

⇒ Capacity = 2400 × 3 = 7200 liters

∴ The capacity of the tank is 7200 litres.
