A tank has an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe. If the outlet pipe is closed then the inlet pipe fills the empty tank in 8 hours. If the outlet pipe is open then the inlet pipe fills the empty tank in 10 hours. If only the outlet pipe is open then in how many hours the full tank becomes half-full?

Calculation:

Let the capacity of the tank be 40 litres (LCM of 8 and 10)

∵ Inlet pipe individually can fill an empty tank in 8 hours

⇒ It fills 40/8 = 5 litres of the tank in one hour.

If both pipes are open empty tank get full in a 10 hour

⇒ Both pipes combined fill 40/10 = 4 litres of the tank in one hour.

⇒ Outlet pipe empty 1 litre of the tank in one hour

For a full tank to becomes half-full outlet pipe has to empty 20 litres

⇒ It will take 20 hours to the half-full tank.
