When the dimensions of a rectangle, having length and breadth of 14 cm and 8 cm respectively, were increased, its area increased by 86.6%. If the length was increased by 5 cm, find the increase in the breadth of the rectangle. Correct Answer 3 cm

Original length = 14 cm

Original breadth = 8 cm

Original area = 14 × 8 = 112 cm2

New area = (100 + 86.6)% of original area = 1.866 × 112 = 208.99 ≅ 209 cm2

Now,

Increase in length = 5 cm

New length = 14 + 5 = 19 cm

Hence,

New breadth = new area/new length = 209/19 = 11 cm

∴ Increase in breadth = new breadth – original breadth = 11 – 8 = 3 cm
