The diameter of the front wheel of an engine is 2x cm and that of the rear wheel is 2y cm. To cover the same distance, what is the number of times the rear wheel revolves when the front wheel revolves n times?
The diameter of the front wheel of an engine is 2x cm and that of the rear wheel is 2y cm. To cover the same distance, what is the number of times the rear wheel revolves when the front wheel revolves n times? Correct Answer nx/y
Circumference of front wheel = 2π × x = 2πx;
∴ Distance covered by front wheel when it revolves n times = (n × 2πx) cm
Circumference of rear wheel = 2π × y = 2πy;
Suppose, real wheel revolves ‘m’ times;
∴ Distance covered by rear wheel when it revolves m times = (m × 2πy) cm
∵ the distance covered is same;
∴ (n × 2πx) = (m × 2πy)
⇒ m = nx/y
∴ Real wheel revolves ‘nx/y’ times.
