The question below is followed by three statements I, II, and III. You have to determine whether the data given is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of mathematics to choose the best possible answer. The river flows towards the city P from city Q. The distance between City P and City Q is 360 km. Two boats A and B run daily from city P and Q respectively at the same time and come back. Find the time when they meet the second time. Statement I: Boat A can cover 120 kilometers distance in 360 minutes in still water. Statement II: Boat B can travel 120 kilometers distance in 450 minutes in still water. Statement III: Boat B can cover 360 kilometers against the flow of the river in 1800 minutes.
Correct Answer All the statements together are required to answer the question.
Let the speed of boat A and boat B in still water is v and w respectively and speed of the river is u.
From,
Statement I:
Speed of boat A (v) = 120/6 = 20 km/hr
Statement II:
Speed of boat B (w) = 120/7.5 = 16 km/hr
Statement III:
w – u = 360/30 = 12 km/hr
⇒ 16 – u = 12
⇒ u = 4 km/hr
The boat A starts from P and move towards Q with speed (20 + 4) = 24 km/hr
And boat B starts from Q and move towards P with speed (16 – 4) = 12 km/hr
So they will meet first time after = 360/(24 + 12) = 10 hours
Boat A then complete its journey after 360/24 = 15 hours
And after 15 hours boat B will cover distance = 12 × 15 = 180 km
Now the distance between A and B is (360 – 180) = 180 km
∴ They will meet second time after {10 + 180/(24 – 12)} = 10 + 15 = 25 hours at 60 km from Q
