The question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statement is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. Ram can do piece of work in x days and Mahesh can do the same piece of work in y days.Find who will be paid more if they work together. I The geometric mean of x and y is 8 II The arithmetic mean of x and y is 10
The question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statement is sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. Ram can do piece of work in x days and Mahesh can do the same piece of work in y days.Find who will be paid more if they work together. I The geometric mean of x and y is 8 II The arithmetic mean of x and y is 10 Correct Answer Neither statement I nor statement II is sufficient to answer the question
From statement I
Geometric mean of two units x and y = √xy
⇒ √xy = 8
⇒ xy = 64
⇒ x = 64/y
From statement II
Arithmetic mean of two units x and y = (x + y) / 2
⇒ x + y = 20
Using both the statements
⇒ 64/y + y = 20
⇒ 64 + y2 = 20y
⇒ 64 + y2 – 20y = 0
Y could be 16 or 4 if y is 16 x must be 4 and if y is 4 then x must be 16 so we cannot answer the question and we need more data to answer the question.
Since We cannot get the answer from the statements I and II together,
∴ Neither statement I nor statement II is sufficient to answer the question
