A boat goes to upstream in a river at the speed of 18 km/hr. The speed of stream is 3 km/hr. A leakage is found in the base of boat which can drown the boat in 3 hours and a pipe is connected with boat can empty the whole water of boat in 6 hours. Find the distance cover by boat before it drowns.

Correct Answer 90 km

Relative speed of boat = 18 – 3 = 15 km/hr

(∵ boat goes to upstream)

Time taken by leakage = 3 hours

Time taken by empty pipe = 6 hours

Let total capacity of boat 6 units

Efficiency of leakage = 6/3 = -2

Efficiency of empty pipe = 6/6 = 1

Time taken to drown the boat = 6/1 = 6 hour

Distance cover by boat = 15 × 6 = 90 km

(∵ Distance = speed × time)

Boat covers the 90 km.
