Calculation:
Let the number of students passed and failed be 25x and 4x respectively
⇒ Number of students appeared = 25x + 4x = 29x
According to the question,
(29x + 3) / (4x – 3) = 8/1
⇒ 29x + 3 = 32x – 24
⇒ 3x = 27
⇒ x = 9
∴ Actual number of students appeared = 29x = 261
