J can complete a work in 15 days while P can complete the same work in 18 days. They started the work together but after 5 days J left the work, P completed the remaining work alone. In how many days the whole work was completed? Correct Answer 12 days

Given:

J can complete the work in 15 days

P can complete the same work in 18 days

J left the work after 5 days

Formula Used:

Work = Efficiency × Time

Calculation:

Total work = LCM of 15, 18 days

⇒ 90 days

Efficiency of J = 90/15

⇒ 6

Efficiency of P = 90/18

⇒ 5

They worked together for 5 days, work completed by J and P in 5 days = (6 + 5) × 5 days

⇒ 11 × 5 days

⇒ 55 days

Now, Remaining work  = 90 – 55 days

⇒ 35 days

Remaining work was completed by P alone, time taken by P to complete the remaining work = 35/5

⇒ 7 days

Total time taken to complete the whole work = 5 + 7 days

⇒ 12 days

∴ The whole work was completed in 12 days.

Total time is asked in the question not the time taken to complete the remaining work
