The average score of 5 students increases by 3 marks when a new pupil comes in place of one of them who has scored 65 marks. What might be the score of the new pupil? Correct Answer 80 marks

Given:

Average score of 5 students increased by 3 marks.

New pupil replaces old student with 65 marks

Calculation:

Let the initial average score of 5 students be x

Let the marks of the new pupil be y

So, the initial total score of 5 students = 5x

When the new student joins in place of the student with 65 marks,

⇒ New total of marks = 5x - 65 + y

New average has become = x + 3

⇒ 5(x + 3) = 5x - 65 + y

⇒ 5x + 15 = 5x - 65 + y

⇒ y = 65 + 15 = 80

∴ Score of new pupil is 80 marks.
