In the following question, two statements are numbered as A and B. On solving these statements we get quantities A and B respectively. Solve for the both quantities and choose the correct option. Quantity A: Vinay secured 92.5% marks in an examination comprising of 5 subjects each of 120 marks. He scored 95% marks in English and Hindi together, while 90% marks in Mathematics. In Science, if he scored one marks more than Social studies, how many marks did he scored in Science? Quantity B: Ashi scored 75%, 80% and 90% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections respectively, in an examination of total 150 marks. If the Physics and Chemistry sections are worth 40% and 20% of the total marks, how many marks did Ashi secured in the examination?
In the following question, two statements are numbered as A and B. On solving these statements we get quantities A and B respectively. Solve for the both quantities and choose the correct option. Correct Answer Quantity A < Quantity B
Quantity A:
Total marks in examination = 5 × 120 = 600
Total marks secured = 92.5% of 600 = 555
As one subject is of 120 marks,
Marks secured in English & Hindi together = 95% of (120 + 120) = 0.95 × 240 = 228
Marks secured in Mathematics = 90% of 120 = 108
Let marks secured in Science be ‘x’
Marks secured in Science & Social studies together = x + x - 1 = 2x - 1
⇒ 2x - 1 = 555 - (228 + 108)
⇒ 2x = 219 + 1
⇒ x = 220/2 = 110
⇒ Quantity A = 110
Quantity B:
Total marks of Physics section = 40% of 150 = 60
Total marks of Chemistry section = 20% of 150 = 30
Total marks of Mathematics section = 150 - (60 + 30) = 60
Marks secured in Physics = 75% of 60 = 45
Marks secured in Chemistry = 80% of 30 = 24
Marks secured in Mathematics = 90% of 60 = 54
Total marks secured in examination = 45 + 24 + 54 = 123
⇒ Quantity B = 123
∴ Quantity A < Quantity B
