The price of wheat has increased by 25%. Lallu Lal has decided to spend only 10% more than what he initially did on buying wheat. What is the percentage decrease in Lallu Lal's wheat consumption? Correct Answer 12%

Given:

The price of wheat has increases = 25%

The expenditure is increased = 10%

Calculation:

Let the initial price of wheat be Rs.x per unit and Lallu Lal's consumption be y units.

∴ Initial amount spent on wheat = xy

The new price of wheat = 125% of x = (125/100) × x = 5x/4

The new total amount spent on wheat = 110% of xy = (110/100) × xy = 11xy/10

So, the new consumption of Lallu Lal's = (11xy/10)/(5x/4) = 22y/25

∴ Decrease in consumption = y – (22y/25) = 3y/25

So, the percentage decrease in consumption =  × 100 = 12%

∴ The consumption of Lallu Lal's is decreased by 12%.
