In which of the following case we can surely say that the body A is charged: a) When a positively charged body is kept near to body A and it gets attracted b) When a negatively charged body is kept near to body A and it gets attracted c) When a positively charged body is kept near to body A and it gets repelled
In which of the following case we can surely say that the body A is charged: a) When a positively charged body is kept near to body A and it gets attracted b) When a negatively charged body is kept near to body A and it gets attracted c) When a positively charged body is kept near to body A and it gets repelled Correct Answer Only in case c the body A is surely charged
CONCEPT:
Electric Charge
- It is defined as the intrinsic property of certain fundamental particles like electrons, proton, etc, due to which they produce electric and magnetic effects.
- Types of electric charge
- Positive charge: A body having a deficiency of electrons.
- Negative charge: A body having an excess of electrons.
- Properties of electric charge
- Like charges repel and unlike charges attract each other.
- A charge is a scalar quantity.
- A charge is always quantized.
- A charge will always remain conserved.
- A charge is always associated with the mass.
- The unit of charge is the coulomb.
⇒ 1 coulomb= charge on 625 × 1016 electrons
EXPLANATION:
- When a charged body is kept closer to another charged body they will repel each other if both the bodies have the same type of charge.
- When a charged body is kept closer to another body that has a charge of opposite nature then the two bodies will attract each other.
- If a negatively charged body is kept near to an uncharged metallic body, the portion of that body which is closer to the negatively charged body will become positively charged and the portion of the body which is away from the negatively charged body will become negatively charged because the electrons will move away due to repulsion force.
- Similarly, when a positively charged body is kept near to an uncharged metallic body, the portion of that body which is closer to the positively charged body will become negatively charged and the portion of the body which is away from the positively charged body will become positively charged because the electrons will move towards the positively charged body due to attraction force.
- So by the above explanation, it is clear that a charged body can attract the neutral body but it can repel only a body that has a charge of similar nature.
- Therefore only in case c where a positively charged body is repelling a body A, we can surely say that body A is charged.
- Hence, option 3 is correct.
