A mixture X which has 80% Copper and rest Zinc is mixed with another mixture of Copper and Aluminium (mixture Y) in the ratio 3 : 5. If the resultant mixture has 60% copper only, find the percentage of aluminium in the mixture Y.

∵ The two mixtures are mixed in the ratio 3 : 5;

Suppose the mixture X is 30 kg and mixture y is 50 kg;

∴ Amount of Copper in mixture X = 30 × 0.8 = 24 kg and

Amount of Copper in resultant mixture = 80 × 0.6 = 48 kg

∴ Amount of copper in mixture Y = 48 – 24 = 24 kg

∵ Mixture Y is 50 kg;

∴ Amount of Aluminium in mixture Y = 50 – 24 = 26 kg

∴ Percentage of Aluminium in the mixture Y = × 100 = 52%
