Which of the following is wrongly matched? (a) Rainfall caused by mountain standing in the way of moisture-laden winds Relief rainfall (b) Rain caused by the vertical circulation of air currents Orographic rainfall (c) Rain caused by a warm moist air mass moving upward over cold air mass Cyclonic rain-fall (d) An area sheltered from rain-bearing winds by a hill. Rain-shadow area Correct Answer b

  • The term orographic and relief rainfall are the same.
  • The convectional rainfall is caused by the vertical movement of air mass.

Types of Rainfall

Rainfall can be classified into three types:

1. Convectional Rainfall

2. Orographic Rainfall

3. Cyclonic or Frontal Rainfall

Convectional Rainfall

  • The air on being heated becomes light and rises in convection currents because of insolation.
  • As it rises, it expands and loses heat and consequently, condensation takes place.
  • Thick dark and extensive cumulo-nimbus clouds are formed.
  • Heavy rainfall occurs for a shorter time with a thunderstorm and lightning.
  • It is very common in the equatorial regions and interior parts of the continents, particularly in the northern hemisphere.

Orographic Rainfall

  • When the saturated air mass comes across a mountain, it is forced to ascend and as it rises, it expands.
  • The temperature falls and the moisture is condensed.
  • The windward (slope of the mountain facing the wind )slopes receive greater rainfall and leeward slopes remain rainless and dry.

Cyclonic Rainfall/ frontal rainfall

  • When two large mass of air currents having unequal densities and temperature came into contact, the rising warm moist air mass reaches above the colder one.
  • The rising warm moist air condenses to form clouds and then causes heavy rainfall.
  • Such rainfall associated with thunder and lightning is also called as the frontal rainfall.
