Consider the following statements: 1. Functions of reinforcement in reinforced soil and in reinforced concrete are comparable. 2. The design of a geotextile reinforced wall is similar in principle to that of a reinforced earth wall. Which of the above statements is/are correct?
Consider the following statements: 1. Functions of reinforcement in reinforced soil and in reinforced concrete are comparable. 2. The design of a geotextile reinforced wall is similar in principle to that of a reinforced earth wall. Which of the above statements is/are correct? Correct Answer Both 1 and 2
Statement-I- True
Both soil and concrete are weak in tension i.e. they cannot resist tensile stresses developed in them due to external loading. Therefore, to enhance the tensile capacity both soil and concrete, both are reinforced.
Note: The reinforced soil is obtained by placing extensible or inextensible materials such as metallic strips or polymeric reinforcement within the soil to enhance its tensile strength and stability as well.
Statement-II- True
Soils can be strengthened by the inclusion of materials with high tensile strength. This mobilisation of tensile strength is obtained by surface interaction between the soil and the reinforcement through friction and adhesion. This same principle is used in design of reinforced earth walls. There are many Geo-synthetic material which are used to reinforce the soil mass. Geo-textile is one of them. Others are: Geo-net, Geo-Foam, Geo-Composite etc.
