Effective teaching in a classroom is the outcome of different strategies. Nature of subject content, age and ability level of the students, available time, physical and human resources, and above all the instructional objective dictates the choice of a teaching strategy.
Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction: Gagne’s learning hierarchies believe that effective learning is best achieved from a carefully designed set of instruction. These set of events consists of nine activities carried out by a teacher (or instructional program) and learners during instruction. The following are the nine events:
Events |
Description |
Gain attention |
Some of the ways to grab the attention of the learners are through storytelling, demonstration, presenting a challenging problem, doing something different, etc. |
Inform the learner of the objectives |
Informing learners about the objectives is to let them know in advance what is expected of them at the end. |
Stimulate recall of prior learning |
Concepts learnt earlier are pre-requisite to learning new concepts. Previous learning should be recalled before new learning can occur. E.g. through questioning |
Present the learning material |
Information is presented to the learner in small chunks from simple to complex sequence. |
Provide guidance for learning |
To allow the learners to comprehend and assimilate the materials presented, the instructor needs to facilitate learning by hints. |
Elicit performance |
The instructor asks questions to elicit learners’ understanding of the material presented. |
Provide reinforcement/ feedback |
Once the correct performance has been exhibited by the learner, there should be feedback concerning the degree of correctness of the learner's performance. |
Assess performance |
The teacher gathers evidence (valid and reliable) regarding the learner's performance through tests. |
Enhance retention and transfer |
Varieties of new tasks are to be assigned to enhance the learner's understanding and to assure the transfer of learning. |
