A shopkeeper mixes two varieties of rice purchased at the rate of Rs. 35 per kg and at the rate of Rs. 28 per kg respectively. If he sells the mixture at the rate of Rs. 36 per kg and gains 20%, then the ratio in which the two varieties are mixed is:
A shopkeeper mixes two varieties of rice purchased at the rate of Rs. 35 per kg and at the rate of Rs. 28 per kg respectively. If he sells the mixture at the rate of Rs. 36 per kg and gains 20%, then the ratio in which the two varieties are mixed is: Correct Answer 2 ∶ 5
Given:
Cost price of variety 1 = Rs 35 per kg
Cost price of variety 2 = Rs 28 per kg
The selling price of mixture = Rs 36 per kg
The profit obtained on selling the mixture = 20%
Concept used:
Sum of the Cost price of two varieties = Cost price of mixture
Calculation:
Let A amount of variety 1 be mixed with B amount of variety 2 rice.
Cost price of mixture = 36 × 100/120 = Rs 30 per kg
35 × A + 28 × B = 30 × (A + B)
⇒ 5× A = 2 × B
⇒ A/B = 2/5
Alternate method:
Cost price of mixture = 36 × 100/120 = Rs 30 per kg

Ratio of mixture = 2 ∶ 5
∴ The ratio in which the two varieties were mixed was 2 ∶ 5.
