Which of the following states of matter is formed by cooling a gas of extremely low density, about one-hundred-thousandth the density of normal air, to super low temperatures?
Which of the following states of matter is formed by cooling a gas of extremely low density, about one-hundred-thousandth the density of normal air, to super low temperatures? Correct Answer Bose- Einstein condensate
Concept:
States of Matter: There are five states of matter.
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Plasma
- Bose-Eienstein Condensate(BEC)
Bose-Einstein Condensate(BEC):
- Gases at extremely low density are cooled to extremely low-temperature therefore, atoms are unable to move at all and collapsed into a single quantum state. As atoms become indistinguishable they behave as a super-atom. They are super-fluids and super-conductors. Example: Helium below temperature 2.17 K.
Plasma state:
It is a mixture of free electrons and ions.
- The state is consists of super excited and super energetic particles that are present in form of ionized gases.
- Plasma is made by heating a gas to a very high temperature so that gas molecules lose all their electrons.
- It does not have a definite shape and volume.
- Example: This state is mostly observed in stars.
The given image shows plasma shooted from the sun.
Additional Information
- Solid: Particles of matter are bounded very tightly so that it has very low kinetic energy (almost negligible) that's why it has a definite shape and volume and cannot be compressed. Example: Iron sheet, aluminium foil.
- Liquid: Particles of matter are bounded loosely so that it has low kinetic energy. The particles can move freely and randomly throughout liquid but do not break the boundaries. It has a definite volume and cannot be compressed. Example: milk, water.
- Gas: particles are not bounded so that it has high kinetic energy. The particles can move freely and randomly anywhere. It does not have a definite shape and volume. It is highly compressible. Example: Water vapour, oxygen, hydrogen.
