A shopkeeper buys 10 notebooks for Rs. 550, 25 folders for Rs. 400 and 40 pens for Rs. 300. He sells all of it at the profit of 20% and notebooks also at a profit of 20%. If he earns Rs. 5 more than twice as much on folders as he earns on pens, at what profit did he sell the folders and pens? Correct Answer 23.75%, 15%

Let the profit earned on pens be Rs. x and on folders be Rs. 2x + 5

Total cost price = Rs. (550 + 400 + 300) = Rs. 1250

Total profit = Rs. 1250 × (20/100) = Rs. 250

Total selling price = Rs. (1250 + 250) = Rs. 1500

Profit on notebooks = Rs. 550 × (20/100) = Rs. 110

Profit on folders = Rs. 2x + 5

Profit on pens = Rs. x

Total profit on folders and pens = Rs. (250 – 110) = Rs. 140 = Rs. 2x + 5 + x

⇒ 3x + 5 = 140

⇒ 3x = 135

⇒ x = 45

Profit on folders = Rs. 2 × 45 + 5 = Rs. 95

∴ Profit % = 95/400 × 100 = 23.75%

Profit on pens = Rs. 45

∴ Profit % = 45/300 × 100 = 15%
