25 kg of alloy X is mixed with 125 kg of alloy Y. If the amount of lead and tin in the alloy X is in the ratio 1 ∶ 2 and the amount of lead and tin in the alloy Y is in the ratio 2 ∶ 3, then what is the ratio of lead and tin in the mixture?

25 kg of alloy X is mixed with 125 kg of alloy Y. If the amount of lead and tin in the alloy X is in the ratio 1 ∶ 2 and the amount of lead and tin in the alloy Y is in the ratio 2 ∶ 3, then what is the ratio of lead and tin in the mixture?  Correct Answer 7 ∶ 11

Ratio of lead and tin in the alloy X = 1 ∶ 2;

∴ Amount of lead in 25 kg of alloy X = (1/3) × 25 = 25/3 kg

And amount of tin in 25 kg of alloy X = (2/3) × 25 = 50/3 kg

Ratio of lead and tin in the alloy Y = 2 ∶ 3;

∴ Amount of lead in 125 kg of alloy Y = (2/5) × 125 = 50 kg

And amount of tin in 125 kg of alloy Y = (3/5) × 125 = 75 kg

∴ Total amount of lead after mixing alloy X and Y = 25/3 + 50 = 175/3 kg

And total amount of tin after mixing alloy X and Y = 50/3 + 75 = 275/3 kg

∴Ratio of lead and tin in the mixture = (175/3) / (275/3) = 7 ∶ 11
