A shopkeeper bought 3 qualities of rice A, B and C at a price of Rs. 80 per kg, Rs. 60 per kg and Rs. 50 per kg respectively. He mixed them such that the mixture contained 40% of quality A, 30% of quality B and remaining quality C. At what price (Rs. per kg) should he sell the mixture to earn a profit of 40%? Correct Answer Rs. 91
Let the total quantity of the mixture be ‘x’ kg
Quantity of quality A in mixture = 40% of x = (2/5)x
⇒ Cost price of quality A in mixture = 80 × (2/5)x = Rs. 32x
Quantity of quality B in mixture = 30% of x = (3/10)x
⇒ Cost price of quality B in mixture = 60 × (3/10)x = Rs. 18x
Quantity of quality C in mixture = 30% of x = (3/10)x
⇒ Cost price of quality C in mixture = 50 × (3/10)x = Rs. 15x
Hence,
Cost price of x kg of mixture = 32x + 18x + 15x = Rs. 65x
⇒ Cost price of 1 kg of mixture = 65x/x = Rs. 65
In order to earn a profit of 40%,
∴ Selling price of mixture = 65 + 40% of 65 = 65 + 2/5 × 65 = 65 + 26 = Rs. 91
