How to Repair Oxidized Cloudy Headlights
If you've noticed your headlights becoming cloudy and hazy, there's no need to worry. Damaged headlights can be repaired safely and relatively easily with the right supplies.
Steps
1. Gather the Supplies
Gather the supplies you'll need to repair the headlights. You'll need a polishing compound or a headlight restoration kit, 800-grit sandpaper, 1500-grit sandpaper, and lint-free rag.
2. Prepare the Headlight
Start by cleaning off the headlight with soap and water. Wipe it down with a lint-free rag and let it dry completely. Once the headlight is dry, cover the areas around the headlight with painter's tape and newspaper.
3. Sand the Headlight
Using the 800-grit paper, sand the headlight in a circular motion. Apply light pressure and continue sanding until the oxidation has been removed. Then switch to the 1500-grit paper and sand until the headlight is smooth. Finally, wipe down the headlight with a damp lint-free rag.
4. Apply the Headlight Cleaner
Using the polishing compound or headlight restoration kit, apply the cleaner to the headlight. Follow the instructions on the product to apply the cleaner. Spread it evenly over the headlight and let it sit for the recommended amount of time. Then, use a damp microfiber cloth to buff the headlight.
5. Finish Up
Once the headlight is buffed, it’s ready to be reinstalled. Remove the painter's tape and newspaper, then install the headlight. Repeat the process on the other headlight, if needed.
