How to Do Push Ups Even When You Can’t Now

Everyone wants to be able to do push ups, but if you can’t quite manage it now, don’t worry. With the right plan and dedication, you can reach your push up goals. Follow these tips to start getting stronger.

1. Start With Modified Push Ups

Start by doing modified push ups to your own level. If you’re a beginner, you can start with wall push ups. Stand facing a wall, lean against it with your arms shoulder-width apart and your feet hip-distance apart, and then bend your arms and push away from the wall. As you get stronger you can move to knee push ups. Kneel on your hands and knees with your hands below your shoulders, and then lower your body down to the floor. Keep your knees on the ground, and then press back up.

2. Strengthen Your Core

Push ups use your core for support, so building up strong core muscles will help you in achieving those push ups. Work on strengthening your core by doing crunches, planks and oblique exercises. This way, when you do modified push ups, you’ll be able to use your core for support as you build strength.

3. Take Your Time

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will you be able to do a full push up in one. Take your time and gradually build up your strength. Each day, practice modified push ups and build up the number you are able to do. If you’re able to do more than yesterday, you know you’re making progress.

4. Increase Intensity

Once you have basic push up form down, make them even harder. To increase difficulty, try narrowing your hands together, raising your feet off the ground or adding in pulses at the bottom of the push up.
