How to Get Rid of Hiccups When You Are Drunk
Nobody likes hiccups, especially when you’re out having a few drinks. Alcohol can cause hiccups because it disrupts the normal breathing pattern, and the hiccup reflex is triggered. There are some ways you can help get rid of these pesky hiccups and get back to enjoying your night out.
Steps
- Try to control your breathing. Can you slow it down by taking deep breaths, and try to relax. It’s important to reset your body’s normal rhythms and regulate your breathing.
- Drink something cold. Try sipping on ice water, or chewing on a few ice cubes. The cold temperature could help reset the diaphragm muscles and distract you from the hiccups.
- Eat something sweet. Eating a spoonful of sugar might sound like an old wives’ tale, but for some people it actually works. The sweetness may stimulate the vagus nerve that can reset the hiccup reflex.
- Distract your mind. Try to focus your attention on something else, like counting backwards or thinking of something funny. Anything that can take the focus away from hiccupping could help.
- Try a teaspoon of vinegar. Take a teaspoon of white or apple cider vinegar, and swallow it before it reaches the back of your throat. Vinegar is acidic and might help settle your stomach.
