An air purifier helps clear the air. To defume and help the carpet, purchase whole lavender and sprinkle it heavily onto the carpet. Walk on it as much as possible. It will freshen and provide anti-bacterial properties in the carpet. Try different types of lavender, as they range from sweet to heady. It's also good to rub this on wood furniture with mildew smells.
