I'm going to patina a steel metal fire pit, how can I stop the rust from running off the metal in the future weeks, years etc.? Clear paint is not an option due to the heat from the fire.

Clean the rust off with a wire brush, sandpaper, or wire wheel, or get it sandblasted. Then you can paint it with high-heat paint commonly used on stoves, engines, etc.
