I tried this method and peeled the duct tape off my shirt while cutting the duct tape open. The duct tape stuck together. Should I just redo it with a worn down shirt and cut the shirt open with tape?

Yes. The best way to do this method is to do it with a shirt you are willing to throw away. Peeling off the tape will be almost impossible.
