Comb through your hair thoroughly before starting the updo. For a messy bun with layers and thick hair, I would not recommend following a fancy tutorial with lots of steps. Often times, those are for girls with thin hair wanting more texture and volume. I would just twist your hair into a bun, and pin layers to your liking.
