I'd like to try to bridge two desktop computers using a special USB cable. Will it be a problem if one is running Windows 10 and the other is running Windows Vista?

It depends on what this 'special' USB cable is. You probably have to install some software for it to work. It should tell you if it's compatible across platforms/versions on the packaging.
