Can you completely submerge the blades in warm soapy water? I am asking about doing it by hand (not dishwasher) which means that water will get on the under side of the grey plastic blade holder.

Use a cleaning brush and soapy hot water to get all around the blade. The blade is not removable and the motor is in the base so try not to submerge the whole thing as this could cause harm to the motor.
