Is it OK to place the citation at the end of a sentence when there are words after the actual quote? For example, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" seemed to apply (Rom. 10:17).

Yes. As long as there is only one quote, you can and should place the reference at the end of the sentence. It only has to be right after the quote if multiple sources are being cited in one sentence.
