It can be if you're confident that they like you and you just can't bring yourself to ask in person. Doing it in person is a lot better in most situations. This will give you the opportunity to gauge their reaction and let the conversation develop naturally. I think a lot of the magic and spontaneity is lost when you ask someone out over a text message.
