Yes, the trips are often not long enough to warm up the oil in the engine so the oil doesn't lubricate the engine as efficiently. If you have a modern diesel car, they come with a particulate filter which prevents soot (unburnt carbon) from escaping through the exhaust. These filters regenerate on long journeys because the exhaust is hot enough to burn off this carbon, but this process simply doesn't occur at lower temperatures (e.g. short driving).
